BioInformatics: an advanced introduction 

The title reflects our (too ?) ambitious goal to provide the students with a glimpse into the major concepts in bioinformatics, but also with the students' empowerment through computer tools that range from biological data transfer up to Variant Calling analysis, within... a week.

In addition to the introduction to the biological data formats, databases and data retrieval through graphical, web interfaces (GUI), data retrieval and manipulation through 'bash' scripting commands are part of the foreseen curriculum for this year.
If time will still be devoted to the power horse of bioinformatics, namely sequence alignment (global/local, e-value, DotPlots, pairwise and multiple, BLAST flavours), part of the curriculum of the previous years (Position-Specific Substitution Matrices & PSI-BLAST, as well as PyMol, UniProt, or tools from the Vienna RNA package) may well have to give room to various 'command line' (CLI) tools, that should ultimately enable examples of MicroArray or RNA Seq data analysis.

Keeping faith in our ability - help us, God! - to prevent install issues (on the students' own PC or Mac), we want to enable students to keep on learning-by-doing, thanks to a tutored computer setting-up that includes the install of various software and packages, which does not preclude further installs of additional bioinformatic tools.

More than half of the time is going to be dedicated to hands-on tutorials, using CLI and GUI tools. Home assignments add up to it...
